Before they are bottled, the wines are first aged in barrels for a period of time. The bunches are all vinified separately, so that after fermentation the best blend can be composed, based on different barrels. To achieve optimum ripeness, the grapes stay on the vine for a relatively long time.

Orin Swift's other important wines are Mannequin, Machete and Blank Stare. Sometimes, the idea for the label comes before the wine. Each label has its own story and inspiration. This wine has now grown into a true cult wine! The labels are true works of art. The Prisoner came on the market in 2003 with only 385 cases. This is a Zinfandel dominated blend, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Bonarda. Orin Swift's most famous wine is The Prisoner. These winegrowers sell their grapes to the winery. Phinney also works with multiple winegrowers from all over California. Dave started with a number of Zinfandel vines, but Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Bonarda, Petite Sirah, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are now also planted. The vineyards are scattered in Rutherford and Oakville.

Rutherford, California is the home base of the winery. Orin is his father's middle name and Swift is his mother's maiden name. One year later, he decided to start his own business and so he founded Orin Swift Cellars in 1998. He started as a seasonal worker at Robert Mondavi. In 1995, Dave moved to Florence to study, where he came into contact with the Italian wine culture. Each label is an evocative expression of art that leaves a heart-skipping impression.Dave Phinney is the founder of Orin Swift Cellars. The creative (if slightly disturbing gothic and grunge) style of their labels encourage you to rethink wine through a different lens. He sets his sights on small lots within the most coveted vineyards while ensuring that only fruit of the highest quality makes it into the final blend. Sourcing for the Orin Swift family takes Dave across the state of California, with special interest in the Napa Valley, Sonoma County and Santa Barbara area. With two tons of zinfandel and not much else, he spent the next decade making wine for others as well as himself and grew the company to what it is today. So in 1998 he founded Orin Swift Cellars Orin is his father’s middle name and Swift is his mother’s maiden name. A few more years of university led to graduation and eventually a job at Robert Mondavi Winery in 1997 as a temporary harvest worker.ĭavid decided that if he was going to work this hard, it would eventually have to be for himself. During that time, he was introduced to wine, how it was made, and got hooked. The history of Orin Swift Cellars dates back to 1995 when, on a lark, David Swift Phinney took up a friend's offer and went to Florence, Italy, to spend a semester “studying”.
